Customized Field Trips

The Flint Children's Museum offers customized field trips to enhance your museum experience! These activities are selected in advance of the field trip and are conducted by museum program staff. Customized field trip sessions are routinely 30 minutes or less, and are conducted in a classroom setting. There are no additional charges for these activities.

Choose ONE of the three special programs that related to the monthly theme.

June 2010 - Seedlings

  • Meet the Bean - Children will study a lima bean seed which has been soaked in water. Students will remove the seed coat and help cut the bean open to see the embryo of the plant inside. Then they will plant the seed in a cup to take home and make a "Bean Seed" booklet.

  • Plant Some Seeds - Students study the shapes and sizes of different seeds (i.e. radish, celery, watermelon, pumpkin) and then choose two to plant in cups to take home.

  • Soil Test - Students use simple "kitchen science" to test different soils to see if they are acidic or alkaline. They will look at the soil with magnifying glasses to see how it's composed of sand (small pieces of rock) and organic materials.

  • Follow the Garden Path - Depending on the weather outdoors, children will either follow a map to find flowers and plants in our Sproutside area or pictures of flowers and plants in the museum.

July 2010 - Oh, Yuck...Again

  • Make a Worm - Children will learn some facts about worms and their importance to soil, and make their own worm out of recycled materials.

  • Oh, Yuck - Roll up your sleeves and get ready to make slime in our "Kitchen Science" laboratory. Children will examine the different properties of their creations.

  • Make Your Own Sidewalk Chalk - This activity takes place in our Sproutside area. Students will mix plaster of paris with color to create chalk while observing the heat reaction from mixing the plaster with water.

August 2010 - Heartbeats

  • You Are What You Eat - Go through the digestive process with Stuffee, our anatomically correct manikin. Learn what happens inside of your body when you eat your lunch. This program can be tailored to most ages and the focus may range from eating healthy foods to where the food ends up.

  • The Sun is the Key - Learn about how all of our food can be traced back to the sun. Children will create a photosynthesis experiment that they can take home to continue.

  • Push & Pull - Learn about how our muscles work and which foods and exercises will keep your muscles healthy and strong.
